Concept: A Year in Technology: A Glance at 2007“The
line between hostility and acceptance […] between an epidemic that tips
and one that does not, is sometimes a lot narrower than it seems.” Apple: The Apple iPhone, with over 300 patents, introduced some of the most revolutionary interfaces and true state-of-the-art technology on the market today. Microsoft: Rivaling technology powerhouse, Microsoft came out with the much anticipated release of Windows Vista. What was not anticipated was the consumers’ boisterous reactions over the newest Windows package, whether good or bad. Music Piracy: Courts fined a single mother of two $222,000 for downloading illegal music. Meanwhile, song prices dropped 31% in 2007 and iTunes provided higher quality music for cheaper prices. Recording artist, Radiohead, took a new stance on piracy laws and released their newest album on their website allowing consumers to choose the price. One Laptop Per Child Campaign: Intel and MIT battle for the cheapest and most effective learning tool for teachers and students in developing nations. According to a Wall Street Journal report on January 3, 2008, “Intel says it no longer will support One Laptop Per Child, and has resigned from the board over the nonprofit's demand that it stop selling its Classmate laptop and other laptops in the developing world. Intel says it has canceled plans for an Intel-based OLPC laptop.” Be Green: The tech world hopped on the bandwagon and declared that going green is the new black. Google, Dell, HP, Intel and some 40 other organization created the Climate Savers Computing Initiative, which works to increase the energy efficiency of computer equipment.
