Tech Headline of the MonthMicrosoft placed a bid to buy out Yahoo January 31st in what could have been biggest sale in technology history at a whopping $44.6 billion. However, Microsoft’s attempt to become a serious competitor against internet powerhouse Google failed February 5th as the Yahoo board unanimously denied the bid (which incidentally dropped to $41.4 billion due to Microsoft’s share drop.) The software giant hadn’t expected Yahoo’s share increase of almost 50% since the bid at the end of January. Yahoo said the bid "substantially undervalues" its international brand, its 500 million users worldwide, and its investments in an online advertising platform. Yahoo co-founder and Chief Executive Jerry Yang has taken steps to try to keep the company independent, including considering an alternate tie-up with Google to handle Yahoo's search operations. Microsoft isn’t giving up yet says analysts. The company is still considering an increase of their offer from $35 to $40 a share for Yahoo. For more information on this topic visit: www.wsj.com |
