Concept: Charging for Email?

It seems AOL has run into some backlash after proposing to charge businesses anywhere from a quarter of a cent to one penny for the delivery of bulk messages to their email subscribers. The plan is to issue the business an electronic postage stamp for a small price. Then the email will be delivered to a legitimate AOL address and marked as authentic. Some industry experts are calling this plan “dangerous” or “dead on arrival” because it violates the democratic principles on the Internet and will do little to fight spam, which has been the largest issue all email users experience today. Other complaints have come forward in correspondence with the belief that email is an inherent right and should remain free as well as large businesses may have an advantage over small businesses due to adequate financing. Visit Google News for more information on this topic.

Recipe: Press Release

One of the most effective ways to gain publicity and secure free advertising is to get it in print. The most common places to start would be newspapers, magazines, and websites that pertain to your business field or local market. Here are some key ingredients for writing your own press release:

  • Provide the contact name, phone number, and email address at the top of the release.
  • Incorporate a title that sums up the release (practice your journalistic styles and make it similar to a newspaper headline; think catchy/attention grabbing.)
  • The most pertinent information ought to be in the first paragraph. (Who, What, Where, When, and Why)
  • Include quotes from knowledgeable sources (i.e. yourself, a client) to liven your release with expert opinions.
  • Stay away from jargon, slang, or buzzwords. Establish a clear message with only the relevant facts.
  • The last paragraph should be a background of you and/or your company. Include the address and contact sources for more information on your trade or company.

A press release will be more powerful if distributed to the right reporter. Start researching your local journalists and publications. Find out which one will cover your beat and submit to them. If you follow these simple rules, your chances for free publicity will be far more successful. Good luck!
