Concept: Viacom Sues YouTube For Over $1 Billion

Video and music industries have shaped very complicated cases in the past 10 years with the growth of the internet. In 2005, the case between Napster and music powerhouse Sony (MGM vs. Grokster) was just one of the many suits that raised serious interests in the Internet and copyright laws. The ruling: It is the responsibility of the copyright owner to complain about the unlawful peer-to-peer distributed content.

In recent months, a new case is developing between Viacom and YouTube. The media mogul Viacom is challenging the MGM vs. Grokster ruling in regards to YouTube users posting copyright videos online. The argument is that it is nearly impossible to monitor the content because the YouTube’s peer-to-peer sites require viewers to be “friends” before any posted content is made visible. This interesting twist may change how these websites operate in the future and how the law views copyrights on the internet.

Recipe: Website Faux Pas

While some are half-full, many are half-empty. This month we figured we’d give our readers a list of website blunders that will almost guarantee visitors will not return. If you are a half-emptier looking to detour visitors from your site, here is a sure-thing list of steps you can take:

  • Encourage grammatical and spelling errors. Use over-the-top and ambiguous language that stays as illogical as possible.
    • Never update any text on the site or images/graphics
  • Avoid a clear navigation. Have as many pages as possible in no particular order and place the navigation in an obscure location of the website, with very small font.
  • Ignore the website maintenance. Link to unreliable sources that are outdated and often no longer available.
  • Place banner ads all over the website and be sure to include pop up ads as an option.
  • Make it utterly impossible to find contact information. Use small font, on a single ambiguous landing page and only include a form.
  • Keep inconsistent branding and market towards the wrong demographics.

By following these steps, you half-emptiers can achieve online bliss…a website with no visitors.
