(The Future of the Written Language)
In a little
over 100 years, people have been finding quick and easy ways to communicate
with others: telegraph, telegram, telephone, two way, walkie talkie,
cell phone, internet, email, IM, forum, blogging, etc. With such advances,
a new form of language has developed, text shorthand. It began with
simple acronyms like “LOL” (Laugh Out Loud), “BRB”
(Be Right Back) and “CUL8R” (See You Later) and has developed
into a worldwide linguistic anomaly.
Some are
enthusiastic about the creativity of shorthand, while others are outraged,
arguing that the shorthand is the downfall of the English language.
In New Zealand, a member of Parliament wrote this as her defense, "Skoolz
r ther 2 educ8 + raze litracy 2 certn standrds" (Schools are there
to educate and raise literacy to certain standards).
With the
use of the internet, there is more written language in the world than
ever before. Is it the further simplifying our ways of communication
or are people rightly concerned with the evolution of the English language?

WILFing
With an
entire world full of sales, banking, communication with friends and
family, dating, and an immeasurable amount of free information, how
is anyone able to stay focused on the web?
UK papers
recently coined the new term, “WILFing”, which is a rough
acronym for “What was I Looking For.” Sources in the UK
claim that Internet users are spending upwards to 2 whole days out of
every month surfing the web or “wilfing” the internet. With
that in mind, we have simple tips to keep you efficiently perusing the
web without losing potentially valuable time:
- Bookmark
sites you visit frequently. It saves the time of trying to remember
or type in the exact URL. (uniform resource locater)
- If you
are using Internet Explorer, install the Google search bar. This will
save you the step of visiting the extra site.
- If
you use Firefox, this is already provided for you.
- Know
what you are searching for, before you visit any website. This will
keep you focused.
- If you
visit informative website, see if they have RSS feeds. Customize your
home page or favorites with these RSS feeds, that way you only need
to go to one page for all the news, weather, industry tips, business
news, personal hobbies, etc.
Aware yourself
of the time you spend on the web and these tips may assist in effectively
managing your time, both at home and office.
