Concept: R.I.P. CybersquattersMicrosoft filed three lawsuits against "Cybersquatters" in the month of August. Cybersquatting is purchasing a domain with the "bad faith intent to profit from that {domain name} mark, including a personal name...{and} registers, traffics in, or uses domain." (Title III Trademark Cyber Piracy Prevention SEC 3002.Ai and ii) A common form of cybersquatting involves the purchasing of a popular company/individuals domain name. The Cybersquatter sits on the name until the legal owner of the name wishes to obtain it, where the "squatter" then prices the domain at an exorbitant amount. Another form of cybersquatting; also known as "typosquatting", refers to the individual who registers a domain name that is "confusingly similar to or dilutive" to a popular/successful domain mark like www.Disney.com to www.Didney.com. Common misspellings such as these send consumers to false sites, where more often than not, obscene material is visible, which can potentially impair the reputation of the popular company. Due to the influx of Cybersquatters in the 90s, the Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act, or ACPA was established in 1999. This act imposes fines of up to $100,000 for anyone who attempts to profit from cybersquatting. Over the years, large companies such as Porsche, UPS, Amazon, Chanel, Nissan, and Microsoft have fallen victim to Cybersquatters. Microsoft earlier this year, began to notice the over 2,000 registered domains each day that targeted the company. Microsoft is still unclear as to who is directly responsible for policing the cybersquatting, but intends to find out more through the litigation. Recipe: Shorthand Made EasyStrapped for time?
