Concept: Adobe and FedEx vs. The Printing Industry

Adobe Systems, Inc. and FedEx Corp. have produced unease in the printing industry. FedEx Corp., in an attempt to campaign the Kinko’s franchise, made a deal with software super giant Adobe Systems, Inc. In Adobe’s new versions of their popular Acrobat and Reader, the software includes a link to upload digital files directly to FedEx Kinko’s, where the files can either be printed for pick up or mailed to recipients.

The National Association for Printing Leadership (NAPL) along with their international counterparts were outraged with the favored treatment in the newest software versions. Adobe representatives met with the NAPL and came to a compromise to immediately remove the link in their newest updates set to go out in October. The original version of Acrobat and Reader with the Kinko button will still be available for customers at the FedEx Kinko’s website.

Recipe: Pick the Perfect Domain

With over 97,857,922 active domains in use as of 9/13/2007 (source: Internet World Stats), it leaves the question, ‘Are there any good domains left?’ The answer is ‘Yes.’ You just have know where to start. Consider these tips before purchasing a domain:

  1. If this is a start up company in need of online presence, consider looking for available domains before you settle on the company name. Do the research. You may find that not only is that domain taken, but the company who owns it is in your same industry.
  2. If this is a preexisting company and the company name is already taken for the .com, don’t just assume that the .net or other suffix will suffice as a main domain. Though .net is generally the second most popular of the TLDs (see July Newsletter for more information on this topic), internet users are still used to the .com suffix and may have difficulties.
    • Consider placing your state acronym in the domain. Look for a domain that helps the search engines regionalize you (if applicable).
  3. Simplicity isn’t always key. Keywords, products, and services may be a great idea if availability is running slim. Think of the biggest search terms internet visitors would use to find your company and start looking for your ideal domain.
  4. Once you find the domain right for you, Market, Market, Market. Put it on all your materials: stationary, business cards, collateral, newspaper, radio, etc.
